At the request of many who read them, I have endeavored to put them in more compact and attractive form. I have made no pretense of literary excellence, or of a deep insight into the history, religion, nature, or habits of the people of the countries through which I have traveled. It would take years of observation and study to attain to that, and volumes to record the results.
